### How to check if your eggs are contaminated with fipronil
According to the Taiwan FDA, check the **traceability code** printed on the egg shell.
* The **first line** indicates the farm or egg-washing facility (e.g., I47045).
* The **second line** shows the packaging date and production method (e.g., 251023C, 251027C, 251030C, 251103C).
If your eggs have any of the codes listed above, **do not consume them**.
Bring the eggs and proof of purchase (such as a receipt) back to the store for a refund.

### What is fipronil and why is it harmful?
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, **fipronil** is a broad-spectrum insecticide commonly used to control ants, termites, and fleas.
Besides agricultural uses, it is also found in environmental sanitation and pet flea-control products.
Under EU standards, the **maximum residue limit** for fipronil in eggs is **5 ppb**.
High intake may cause damage to the **liver, kidneys, and thyroid**, and chronic exposure can affect the **nervous system**.
The Ministry of Environment has explained that contamination may occur when fipronil is **improperly used in chicken coops** or when **feed ingredients are contaminated with pesticides**.
Animal studies indicate that fipronil may **increase the risk of thyroid cancer** and harm the **liver and kidneys**, so most countries have residue limits for animal-derived foods such as eggs, milk, and meat.

### What if you’ve eaten contaminated eggs?
The Taiwan FDA stated that, according to the **World Health Organization (WHO)**, the **acute reference dose (ARfD)** for fipronil is **0.003 mg/kg body weight**.
For a 60 kg adult, one would need to eat **about 100 contaminated eggs within 24 hours** to reach the short-term health risk threshold.
Because fipronil is **fat-soluble**, it is mainly excreted through the digestive system, with a small amount through urine.
It is recommended to **drink plenty of water** and **eat high-fiber fruits and vegetables** to help accelerate its elimination from the body.
The FDA further noted that from **2018 to the present**, a total of **4,232 samples** of eggs on the market have been tested for pesticide residues, and all results met safety standards.
Testing will continue to ensure food safety.
